SPRING JUST AROUND THE CORNER

With the new spring fishing coming into play in a few weeks time its going to be very interesting to see what the new season brings and iam very keen to get going as i think it will be a better season all round and more spring salmon will be in the system as all are going to be returned but even if fish caught in early season get up to us in late april may time it should be great top see more nos in the pools and maybe this will encourage new fish to stop a bit and its this that could bring us more sport .We have gone with a syndicate for first 5 months and only 4 rods a day that will give fantastic chances to all the guys that are looking forward to fishing the spring syndicate and it will be great fun for everyone involved .Theres still a tuesday to let on day to day basic for let rods just so its not fully closed down to others so 4 rods each tuesday book at www.tweedswood .com .The backend is live and filling up very fast as its our 4th year wioth the same prices which is a keen indication that we are keen to give oour guys first class fishing and value as well with out you the anglers support there would be no jobs for alot of people so its very much appreciated again just book online at www.tweedswood.com .Its been a fantastic season in 2010 on tweed and we had fantastic fun in the back end with great results 190 for the season thats great news and some fantastic first salmon for beginners at tweedswood we pride ourselfs on giving fiorst class tuition and instruction as part of you day out and its that all important day that has seen many come back to have there casting brushed up or a new rod and line tested in the right enviroment for testing in the water and up to your knees if its still good then its agreat start as a badly fitted salmon rod and line plus reel are the tools of the trade on your fishing day out its cost alot of money that special day why spend half of it not being able to cast when a custom fit from a proffesional casting instructor will give so much insite to your needs and if i cant get what you are looking for i have a lot of different contacts that will have a set up we can try but please if looking to buy anything be it LOOP VISION HARDY LOOMIS SAGE just try before you buy ive seen it time and time again brand new £700 spent and cant cast it to save there selfs confidence in taters and a good days fishing having to be spoilt for that 2hours or less to have tried out the new gear on the water its a very valuable lesson . I watch guys cast every day 10 months of the year and i can sort out things just in the passing i take great pride in helping out people i want there day to be special and further more to come back its so important hope to see some new faces at tweedswood this yaer and dont hesitate in contacting me on anything casting and Gear wise full lOOP test centre plus just about every line there is and of course as its now known the first home of Skagit 5 years since i had my first go at the skagit it wsa totally blown out the water to heavy to thick that wont work in Great Britain yeh rests history cheers Kevin.............

25th June 2010 great to see the new beat web site up and running its very easy and simple but it gets us out there plus its the only place to book salmon fishing for the coming season and beyond its our own booking system thats going very well know and very good to get a chance to have our own independent web site again . We had one 5 years ago but its taken a back seat while the new owners got going but its back and it will keep us up to date on all things tweedswood its very easy to get to its www.tweedswood.com so have a look and its your one stop site for booking the fishing cheers Kev.

great pic of alans springer very pleased to see it and we managed another on the Saturday but a very strange salmon as it was only 2 and a half pound but paint fresh and a first for Ray but very unushall are the springers shrinking who knows but lets hope for another tommorrow cheers Kevin.

MAY THE 22ND LEADER IN ITS ANGEL DELIGHT CONSISTENCE.

SITTING BULL

28th may whewwww a salmon at last thought it would never happen again weeks of fishing nothing and great result pic to follow it just shows as i always say you are one cast from your next salmon its fantastic a bit time sorting out casting in slow water no disturbance fished out the pool once i had the double spey tuned in and we were happily casting away bang fish safley returned to fight another day what a great feeling all round and well done that man never say never its called fishing not casting and if you always go to the river with that in mind its going to be a great day out no matter what.. cheers kevin one better than last spring .............heres a link to live pic of lower floors web cam.

27th may at last a few salmon caught up stream of us the fish that have been in there summer pools above the cauld and at middle pravilion came on the take yesterday and there was a good bit of action which is good news we didnt see much and it was very evedent it was resting salmon from the beats theres a block realise of water due today so might get it freshened up a bit but still in need of rain its got to come sometime a warm spring flood is the best we didnt get it and if it rains now we could just get some action in coming days cheers kev.

We have had a scorcher in the shade at the fishing hut most days this week its been 26degrees thats unreal the guys that fished have had it tough and its really true july conditions never mind may its the first true may weather we have had for a long time and it just looks like the salmon have said no further than dryburgh as thats how its been a few below the tweedswood beat and one above if it rains a bit we will have some fun but with the weather poised for settled iam not sure what to predict over coming months but the long range has it as very settled and the glass has gone right back to dry ive not seen it as far round for a while .Ive got in chief sitting bull from the field to preform a bull rain dance and paid him the price of half a dozen carrots so lets see how that shapes up . If you were unlucky enough to be below the leader on sat it was a no go area the land slides and bank errosion from a huge tropical storm last night put paid to that one it was a huge electric storm that set of huge amounts of rain to give a full on flash flood in the lauder area i could see the lightning from gala unreal and in broad day light it was a exciting sight but not if you were under it. I can only say we are in the hands of the rain gods we need rain and thats all its about ive never seen it as low and just will have to wait like all of us cheers Kevin.

Blast from the past. Border Greenwell.

18th may heres a heron getting stuck into the smolt run going home to the sea there were 4 herons in about a space of 1000 yards going at it all day but thats just the tip of the ice berg when you take what they get in a smolt run this big heron wasnt even bothered about us watching him fishing he was just mopping them up all day its unreal and inbetween were 4 goosanders having a go must have left the nest for a bit feeding before they hatch out the next army salmon are in a bad enough state but all those things arent helping iam sure this will be the same all the way down river times come for a bit action on thoses birds and vermin and thoses pics are hard evedence . Fishings very slow in the middle we are as low as ive seen it for a while only thing we can hope for is rain and a flood to bring in the seatrout cant wait for them its unreal how important a role they play know adays with the poor spring they get a good bit action going and low or high water it dosnt matter sending in the pics to the biologist cheers Kev.

SAFLEY RETURNED TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY

The border greenwell trout fly big and ushally told to big will catch trout every day of the trout season and ive used it all my trout fishing days from my earliest casts on the upper tweed to today its always a winner not every trout coming straight to it but keep it going and it will get you a brace every time the locals here are know on to it and i see it coming back into the shops its unreal but will always hold a special place in my trout fly box infact its all thats in it . As boys up in haylodge park we were very privalaged to have watch the old masters in dry fly casting out over trout we would sit amazed at what went on but just didnt have the ability to cast out like thoses old guys but our turn came and we were given our first shots at casting i wasnt any good to be honest and never really got going at it but tried hard and just loved to see thoses guys casting out and covering trout there were sometimes 5 all gathered up together pipes and from all walks of life from mill workers to farmers old cubby was a master at casting out what could only be discribed as a battle ship coming down but it was the same fly and tying as in the picture and when a trout made the fatal mistake it was curtains very few were missed on those outings . If only we had video of thoses great fun afternoons at the missy and the old fird they were true castingand dry fly fishing masters and the lucky few that were taught have all gone on to teach outhers iam sure. Its just so good going out and casting that fly this morning tying it up exactly as it would have been 40 years ago and still covering and landing two fantastic plump trout but not into the creel like the boys did but safly returned to the river for another day its with a huge thanks i owe it to the Border Green well and the old brigade of haylodge park.
the tying is size 10 hook yellow tying thread let it get dirty from your hands as you tye it brown cock hackle bottom and grizzel and dun hackles top just 2 turns each there you have it ive seen it tyied at river side no vice no varnish and removed from a trouts mouth 5 minutes later i couldnt cast as good as the others but was good at tying them up for the old eyes that were going fast so that was important and iam sure that theres a few more trout to come to the border greenwell . Give it a try keep it big and untidy its not a thing of beauty but it catches trout thats for sure and as i said when you try it out you will hear those words ring true its coming down like a battle ship because it is unsinkable no fancy ginks or dressings required just air in the back cast and up it pops give it a go dont buy them tyie them cheers Kevin.

spring 2010

14th may its rained for first time in a while and heavy showers are forcast over next 24hrs river actually rose 1 inch better than nothing so we might just get a 6 inch rise before mondy fingers crossed cheers kev.

13th may
rain in the air and maybe a chance of extra water its a good bit rain so fingers crossed for it to come and move whats left of spring run up here for us to try our hand at catching a few. heres a pic of our pet oyster catcher eric hes tame and nests same place each year sitting on 3 eggs no crow is safe ive already shot a few that are to keen in the eggs 8 days or so till big day and they hatch hope its a bit warmer. Coming week might just be better and heres hoping the DEES having a good go this week with winter finally letting go its grip and good nos on all the beats maybe the catch and realise and fly only well 95% is showing the way forward who knows cheers Kevin.

Tweedswood pool 11th may.

Bridge pool
11th may
heres a couple of pics to let you see river conditions its very low indeed but it will rain soon i hope theres salmon just below us and thats good but hope a few days rain will push them back to us its very dry at the moment but you never can say never was speacking to gledswood ghillie andrew and they moved a few on sunray shadows last night totally against the state of play . Its good weather for everyone else but the fishers are always looking for rain or no rain its a hard task to get it right but that what keeps us coming back . will keep up dated cheers kevin just building the blog back its a slow process but ive got it protected this time as well with blog blocker so thats good as its totally heart breacking to build it up and over night its gone so should get good go at it cheers Kevin.

8th may. still low water and salmon just not getting going up to us the beats in the melrose area just getting missed out for know but it has to change soon a bit warm water a good rise and we will get a chance its ver frustrating waiting but its never not happened yet so just got to wait . ive had a good go at the opti adapted shooting heads know and they are going very well casting good distances for very little effort and with a good all round fishing system we are on to a very good thing here with them . ive been trying out the new evotec spey rods with the balance handles and also really enjoying casting with them good shooting head and also conventional casting rods as well they will make there mark iam sure on the coming fishing season . Theres a good feed back from the tweed fair from all the guys this week and it looks like a huge sucess with over 2000 people at it which is a fantastic turn out and all credit where its due to Eoin and the guys for there efforts in the big picture in the kelso area there will have been much needed income to fishing beats hotels and band bs so its the whole area that will have managed to get a bit income out of it and its much needed at this time of the year. heres hoping that i get the chance next year to get along i had other commitments but should get there next year its a great catch up and meet place and at £8 to get in great value iam sure that there will be plans under way already for 2011 cheers heres to a wee rain dance Kevin.

5TH mAY Sill low water conditions are causing hard fishing with a very cold wind salmon are evedent in the pools but just not coming to the fly the sunray has been tried very hard but nothing so far but one did lunge at it its a bit warmer today at about 4 oclock and its looking like warmer south westerly air coming in in next few days so thats very good news . The coming month is ushally our best one but low water is king at the moment theres a bit rain coming in in the next few day at this rate we will be back on fresh water from megget its a worry the way it just goes all the trees are taking there share i supose but lets hope for a little rain in coming weeks ahead cheers Kev.

Just shows what a little help does ken just starting out in his spey casting shows that a circle spey left hand up is very acheivablev once you are taught it properly not bad at the end of the days fishing no salmon caught but will never fear the east wind coming upstream great effort well done Ken.

1st May Very hard going this week with salmon very poor to catch theres a real lul in action but its also very cold and low water we could do with a good warm water flood and see what happens the Tweed angling far is in full flow but iam not on the go this year busy today at river and of with sandy tommorrow on a show jumping day Beths in action for first time so big day lots of pressure . The coming week has to be much the same iam afraid but the least bit extra water woukld be much appreciated its very dry for april but the low water beats are starting to catch ive just got my fingers crossed that the seatrout come they are starting to play a huge part in the fishing where they used to be just surplus to requirement unreal .With three bad seasons another and thats the 4 year cycle complete of bad springs so we are really in a very interesting situation i was on the Dee ghilling the year before the small hatchery was installed at Dess and full catch and realise was called on to the river is it going that way on the tweed its looking very like it and we can only watch this space if we are to enjoy thoses magnificent fish we all need to stand together and get behind a new policy to protect the river in all times and not lose the sport we all enjoy cheers Kevin. 28th april Very windy this day at the river and bright talk about 2 days being different saw only one salmon today but low waters a pain at the moment cant believe iam saying this but a warm flood would see a bit action in the river water 47 degrees today so ok but low and bright the problem the coming days are also the same but hopefully a bit rain coming in cheers Kevin. 27th april water still low but a few more fish coming through the system but just not taking anything that put in font of them but where are they going in such low water .They are clearly running fish and its good to see them but the etterick must be very low and boleside are not catching a lot more so with a nice pic of fearnielee spring salmon clear for all to see are they running up the tweed system more than we know as fishing effort is nil in that area who knows maybe that side of the river is getting a few more than we know about its not impossible as they are very keen to keep going in such low water. The next small rise water temp coming good theres going to be some action thats for sure so watch out weve a few rods to let and very good value even if fishings not spot on we can get your casting up to speeed thats for sure and a lot of people are taking the chance to do so iam always only to keen to help ive also the full LOOP rod range to try out with the opti adapted shooting heads theres a price range for every one and very pricing structure in place just get intouch if you want to try out a POWER SPEY, EVOTEC, or the XACT fly rods SPEY CLASSIC . cheers kevin. 25th april 2010 Fishing just coming back a bit spring wise and a few salmon coming into the beat the catches have been better and we are hoping that a few fresh salmon keep coming through . the total so far is 6 thats not a lot but thats all we had whol;e of 2010 so its better.the trout fishing's going very well and we are enjoying a good start with very big trout around early chasing smolts on there way back to the sea to start there journey good luck to them once they hit the sea it always was once they were in the sea they had a good chance changed are thoses thoughts iam sure by everyone thats experiencing this spring fishing . The full catch and realise is on and no salmon to be killed but pity they hadnt just done that from the start its a hard call but we need full catch and realise probably for ever yeh ever in spring and wait till one day its back but i honestly feel its a cycle ive been in it every year of the conservation measures and its not made a bit difference we still have a hard time in the spring lets hope for a good seatrout run as they saved the day last year thats for sure. The tweed fair is on this week and hope the guys have a good one and the weathers looking very good for it so everyone will be very happy indeed its a fantastic day out thats for all the family . Cheers Kevin. Frsh salmon going all the way through today good to see them but then it is april and its know that this should be happening not seen scores for today but sure it must have been good . The coming week should be settled and with water low and warnming up the fly size is going to change and lines as well the skagits gone to bed and the LOOP opti adapted system has come out for the next stage in the season its sunray time and ive just taken stock from border gun rooms of great long goat hair its instock know. Theres a good chance that we can get going with this method and iam keen to start a bit early on it fishing it a bit below the surface and seeing what happens will up date ive got the new evotec range instock for demonstration so call in and have a try out if you fancy it 15 and 14 foot. cheers Kevin.
