25th June 2010 great to see the new beat web site up and running its very easy and simple but it gets us out there plus its the only place to book salmon fishing for the coming season and beyond its our own booking system thats going very well know and very good to get a chance to have our own independent web site again . We had one 5 years ago but its taken a back seat while the new owners got going but its back and it will keep us up to date on all things tweedswood its very easy to get to its www.tweedswood.com so have a look and its your one stop site for booking the fishing cheers Kev.

27th may at last a few salmon caught up stream of us the fish that have been in there summer pools above the cauld and at middle pravilion came on the take yesterday and there was a good bit of action which is good news we didnt see much and it was very evedent it was resting salmon from the beats theres a block realise of water due today so might get it freshened up a bit but still in need of rain its got to come sometime a warm spring flood is the best we didnt get it and if it rains now we could just get some action in coming days cheers kev.

We have had a scorcher in the shade at the fishing hut most days this week its been 26degrees thats unreal the guys that fished have had it tough and its really true july conditions never mind may its the first true may weather we have had for a long time and it just looks like the salmon have said no further than dryburgh as thats how its been a few below the tweedswood beat and one above if it rains a bit we will have some fun but with the weather poised for settled iam not sure what to predict over coming months but the long range has it as very settled and the glass has gone right back to dry ive not seen it as far round for a while .Ive got in chief sitting bull from the field to preform a bull rain dance and paid him the price of half a dozen carrots so lets see how that shapes up . If you were unlucky enough to be below the leader on sat it was a no go area the land slides and bank errosion from a huge tropical storm last night put paid to that one it was a huge electric storm that set of huge amounts of rain to give a full on flash flood in the lauder area i could see the lightning from gala unreal and in broad day light it was a exciting sight but not if you were under it. I can only say we are in the hands of the rain gods we need rain and thats all its about ive never seen it as low and just will have to wait like all of us cheers Kevin.

Blast from the past. Border Greenwell.

18th may heres a heron getting stuck into the smolt run going home to the sea there were 4 herons in about a space of 1000 yards going at it all day but thats just the tip of the ice berg when you take what they get in a smolt run this big heron wasnt even bothered about us watching him fishing he was just mopping them up all day its unreal and inbetween were 4 goosanders having a go must have left the nest for a bit feeding before they hatch out the next army salmon are in a bad enough state but all those things arent helping iam sure this will be the same all the way down river times come for a bit action on thoses birds and vermin and thoses pics are hard evedence . Fishings very slow in the middle we are as low as ive seen it for a while only thing we can hope for is rain and a flood to bring in the seatrout cant wait for them its unreal how important a role they play know adays with the poor spring they get a good bit action going and low or high water it dosnt matter sending in the pics to the biologist cheers Kev.

SAFLEY RETURNED TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY

The border greenwell trout fly big and ushally told to big will catch trout every day of the trout season and ive used it all my trout fishing days from my earliest casts on the upper tweed to today its always a winner not every trout coming straight to it but keep it going and it will get you a brace every time the locals here are know on to it and i see it coming back into the shops its unreal but will always hold a special place in my trout fly box infact its all thats in it . As boys up in haylodge park we were very privalaged to have watch the old masters in dry fly casting out over trout we would sit amazed at what went on but just didnt have the ability to cast out like thoses old guys but our turn came and we were given our first shots at casting i wasnt any good to be honest and never really got going at it but tried hard and just loved to see thoses guys casting out and covering trout there were sometimes 5 all gathered up together pipes and from all walks of life from mill workers to farmers old cubby was a master at casting out what could only be discribed as a battle ship coming down but it was the same fly and tying as in the picture and when a trout made the fatal mistake it was curtains very few were missed on those outings . If only we had video of thoses great fun afternoons at the missy and the old fird they were true castingand dry fly fishing masters and the lucky few that were taught have all gone on to teach outhers iam sure. Its just so good going out and casting that fly this morning tying it up exactly as it would have been 40 years ago and still covering and landing two fantastic plump trout but not into the creel like the boys did but safly returned to the river for another day its with a huge thanks i owe it to the Border Green well and the old brigade of haylodge park.
the tying is size 10 hook yellow tying thread let it get dirty from your hands as you tye it brown cock hackle bottom and grizzel and dun hackles top just 2 turns each there you have it ive seen it tyied at river side no vice no varnish and removed from a trouts mouth 5 minutes later i couldnt cast as good as the others but was good at tying them up for the old eyes that were going fast so that was important and iam sure that theres a few more trout to come to the border greenwell . Give it a try keep it big and untidy its not a thing of beauty but it catches trout thats for sure and as i said when you try it out you will hear those words ring true its coming down like a battle ship because it is unsinkable no fancy ginks or dressings required just air in the back cast and up it pops give it a go dont buy them tyie them cheers Kevin.
